MATTRESS FACTORY BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Michael J. White, Chairman, is Assistant Professor of Surgery for University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and is an Attending Physician at both Allegheny General Hospital and UPMC Passavant Hospital. He served two years as the President of Medical Staff for Allegheny General Hospital until 2004 and currently sits on their Board of Directors. In addition, Dr. White is a Guest Examiner for the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He joined the Board in June 2006 and became Chairman of the Board in 2010.
Barbara Luderowski is Board President and is the museum’s founding Director. She now shares Co-Directorship with Michael Olijnyk. She is responsible for guiding and refining the museum’s artistic vision and marshalling the resources needed to achieve its goals. She directs capital projects, fundraising activities, policy planning and initiatives, and provides guidance on day-to-day operations.
Michael Olijnyk, Board Member, is Co-Director and was Curator of Exhibitions from 1978 to 2008. He has worked closely with more than 330 artists to implement the museum’s artistic program. He was responsible for all aspects of the residency and exhibition program, artist support during installation, training and supervision of gallery assistants, and maintenance of permanent collection. He serves on both the Education and the Governance Committees.
Ellen Mazo, Secretary, is director of Government Affairs at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. An award-winning health writer, she is a former reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. She has taught journalism at the University of Pittsburgh and has been a freelance writer for a range of publications, including People and Runner’s World magazines. Her book, “The Immune Advantage,’’ was published in 2001 by Rodale. She serves on the Governance Committee.
Scott Leff, Treasurer, is the Associate Director of the Bayer Center for Nonprofit Management at Robert Morris University. Scott holds a Masters Degree in business and technology from Carnegie Mellon University and has spent more than 25 years as a senior level business executive, entrepreneur, consultant to nonprofits, and member of more than 20 nonprofit Boards. Scott’s particular expertise is in the areas of strategic planning, financial planning, social entrepreneurship, marketing, technology strategy, organizational development, and executive management. His former positions include Senior Vice President and COO of Fayette Bank and Trust Company, where he planned and implemented the Bank’s merger with BT Financial Corporation. Scott also has been Senior Vice President and COO of AmeriServ Trust and Financial Services, and President of Bright Plaza, Inc., a Carnegie Mellon University spin-out technology company. He is also a professional executive and life coach, having completed training through Duquesne University's International Coaching Federation (ICF) credentialed coaching program.
Mary-Lou Arscott, is a British architect who has been involved in design centered architectural practice and radical construction initiatives since the 1970's. Her work has been engaged with overlapping ideas across the fields of art and architecture. This has been realized through a variety of projects, either working as an architect or by assisting artists as a designer and maker. She moved to Pittsburgh in 2007 and has been a studio instructor in the architecture program at Carnegie Mellon University. In 2012 Mary-Lou was the curated the Mattress Factory exhibition Intimate Friction, as part of the Gestures series.
Suzy Davisson-Donahue, is Vice President, Senior Healthcare Business Development Consultant at PNC Financial Services Group. Suzy has been in the technology industry for over 25 years, primarily responsible for managing sales teams in domestic and global organizations. She graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. in Finance. Suzy serves on the Business Development Committee of the Mattress Factory Board of Directors.
Delanie Jenkins, is an artist and past participant in the Mattress Factory residency program. She received her BA from the University of Texas at Dallas and M.F.A. from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She is currently Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Studio Arts at the University of Pittsburgh and was visiting Professor of Sculpture at the University of Iowa.
Jim Matthews, is currently President of JEM Innovation LLC and the former Vice President – R&D/Innovation, at Heinz North America. Mr. Matthews joined Heinz in 1980 from Unilever. In 1991 he was promoted to Director, R&D and in 2000, he was promoted to VP R&D/QA for Heinz North America. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology/Medical Technology in 1976 from SUNY - Geneseo and a Master of Business Administration in Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - Troy, NY in 1987.
Khari Mosley, is currently The Pittsburgh Regional Director of the League of Young Voters, a National Non-Profit Organization based in Harlem New York City. Mr. Mosley has worked on electoral campaigns and public policy projects with City-Councilman Sala Udin, City-Councilman Bill Peduto and State Representative Jake Wheatley, is the elected chairman of Pittsburgh's 22nd Ward Democratic Committee, the National Co-chair of the National Hip-Hop Political Convention and is on the boards of the Central Northside Neighborhood Council, Northside Leadership Conference and ACLU-Pittsburgh Chapter.
Anne Nemer Dhanda, is the Director, Global Talent Development at PPG Industries. Prior to this, Anne was the Assistant Dean and Executive Director of the Center for Executive Education and EMBA Worldwide programs of the University of Pittsburgh. With a B.A. from University of Michigan, Master's in Education from George Washington University and MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, Anne is a committed internationalist who will contribute to the development of international shows, partnerships and recognition of the Mattress Factory.
Nancy Ostrow, is a contemporary art enthusiast and has been a member of the Mattress Factory since 1997.
Tracey Taylor Perles, has worked as an award-winning communications consultant specializing in providing integrated communication solutions for business and industry. In addition to communication strategy, client services include public and media relations, corporate identification packages, advertising, brochure design, employee and client communications, special event management and planning, and crisis communication management. She holds a MBA from Duquesne University, BA from Edinboro University. Docent for Art Society at The Duquesne Club.
Hilary Robinson, is Dean of the School of Art and Design at Middlesex University in London. She was previously Professor of Art Theory and Criticism at Carnegie Mellon University. From 2005-2010 she was Stanley and Marcia Gumberg Dean of the College of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to that, she was a member of the faculty at the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland where she was Professor of the Politics of Art and Head of the School of Art and Design. A trained painter, Robinson has worked as a freelance arts administrator, critic and lecturer. She has published several important works in contemporary art theory including Visibly Female, Feminism-Art-Theory 1968-2000 and Reading Art, Reading Irigaray: the Politics of Art by Women.
Sharon Semenza, holds a degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and has worked in New York City, London, Hong Kong and Sydney as a special counsel in international corporate finance, as well as counsel for Citigroup and for PNC’s Capital Markets Group. Semenza serves on the Board of Trustees of The Winchester Thurston School and is a member of the Individual Gifts Committee of the Carnegie Museums and the Events Committee of The Autumn House Press. Semenza has also sat on various non-profit boards, including Women’s Health Services, The Rebecca Residence, The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, The Falk School Board and The Neighborhood Academy.
Robert Sendall, is a nationally-known Chef, Event Producer, Wedding Coordinator, Consultant and Teacher. He studied with the American Culinary Federation National Apprentice Program and the Greenbriar Culinary Apprentice Program—valedictorian in both, as well as studying with Chef Roger Verg's France School for American Chefs and Apprenticing for Chef Madeleine Kamman. Some of his notable clients have been: H.J. Heinz, the Heinz Family Foundation, the Howard Heinz Endowments, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hillman, Morgan Stanley, Ms. Sharon Stone, the Ted Lerner Family, and Mrs. Teresa Heinz and Senator John Kerry. During the 2009 G-20 Pittsburgh summit, All in Good Taste Productions prepared the meals for the Presidents and their First Ladies at the Phipps Conservatory, Rosemont Farm and the Warhol Museum.
Alice Snyder, is founder of Fine Arts Services and a founder of Sweetwater Arts Center. She is also a member of the Board of the Old Sewickley Post Office Cultural Center and the Three Rivers Arts Festival.
John Verbanic is currently the Account Director for CA Technologies, Inc. of Islandia, NY managing their relationships with PNC Financial Services Group of Pittsburgh, as well as Cardinal Health in Dublin, OH. John was previously employed by Hewlett-Packard, having spent 32 years in sales management positions in the Corporate Accounts space (PNC, Alcoa and UPS), as well as in the printer, PC and minicomputer arenas. He spent three years as Vice President in the Global Client Management organization at BNY Mellon. This combination of experiences provides a strong sense for the strategic role of information technology in the financial services world, and serves to merge these needs for organizations. John is a graduate of Potsdam State with a BA in Economics, and has completed graduate studies at Syracuse University, University of Rochester and Cornell University. He resides just north of Pittsburgh with his wife, Judy. John serves on the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross of Southwestern PA and the Board of Directors of Special Olympics Pennsylvania.
Alan Wells, is the Thomas J Gill III Professor of Pathology and Vice-Chair of the Department of Pathology at the University of Pittsburgh. He is also Professor of Bioengineering and a member of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine and Cancer Institute. He is also on Staff of the Veterans Administration Medical Center and an Adjunct Professor at Tuskegee University. Dr. Wells, who received his MD from Brown University and DMSc from Karolinska Institutet (Sweden), is Medical Director of the UPMC Clinical Laboratories. He has received numerous international recognitions for his investigations and service.
Jake Witherell, is Chief Operating Officer of Schell Games, a privately-owned, full service game design studio. He has over 15 years of experience in founding, managing, advising, and investing in companies within the high technology, telecommunications, retail, and business services industries. Jake holds a BA in Economics from Tufts University and an MBA from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University. He also earned a certification from the Entrepreneurial Management Program at Carnegie Mellon University.
Maureen Young, JD., was Director of the Office of Government Relations at Carnegie Mellon University until her retirement in 2008. Her responsibilities included the development and implementation of University strategy for interacting with community, state & federal elected officials and policy makers. Before being asked to head the Office of Government Relations, Ms. Young managed government communications at the University’s Software Engineering Institute, a defense sponsored Federally Funded Research & Development Center (FFRDC).
