Mini-Factory: COLOR

10:00AM 

Mini-Factory is a FREE interactive learning program designed specifically for children ages 3-6 years old and their parents and/or caregivers that uses contemporary installation art as the basis for enabling parents and educators to explore education ideas.

Young children will explore a variety of themes and installations at the Mattress Factory, participate in story time with our partners form Reading is FUNdamental and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Allegheny and work on a collaborative project in our Mini-Factory. The Mini-Factory is a mobile, adaptable pop-up space that children can help to build and use to explore new ideas and concepts. Young artists will participate in projects that promote making and sharing.

MINI-FACTORY is FREE but you must RSVP to felice[at]mattress.org or at 412.231.3169 because space is limited.

You can sign up for workshops individually. Please let us know if you are unable to attend so we can contact those people on our waiting list. Parents must accompany children and participate in the activities with their child.

PGH Photo Fair: Daile Kaplan

Lecture begins promptly at 7pm, seating is first-come first-served

PGH Photo Fair has teamed up with the Mattress Factory to host a series of three lectures leading up to the Fair May 17-18, 2014 at the Carnegie Museum of Art Hall of Sculpture. The series aims to augment the already rich art and photography scene in Pittsburgh with speakers who will focus on the state of the art, collecting, and connoisseurship.

 

The second lecture will feature Daile Kaplan, Vice President and Director of Photographs & Photobooks at Swann Galleries, where she is also an auctioneer. Daile appears regularly as a photographs specialist on the PBS telivision program Antiques Roadshow, and has also appeared on The History Channel, HGTV and The Discovery Channel.

Ms. Kaplan will speak from her broad experience in the auction world using details from past and upcoming sales to introduce us to the pleasures and perils of auction buying. Guest speaker presentation followed by audience Q&A.

ARTLab: Searching for the Sun

Don't miss your last chance to participate in the truly electrifying Photovoltaic Solar Energy and Art Series! In part four of the session we will focus on solar energy as an employment opportunity. Fred Underwood of Pittsburgh-based solar panel company Underwood Solar Future LLC will be stopping by to do solar siting and show off his Solar Pathfinder. Conservational Consultants Inc. education Indigo Raffel will also be at ARTLab facilitating solar printing and educational games.

The final lecture will feature Sam Berkovitz, the Founder and Director of Concept Art Gallery in Pittsburgh. Mr. Berkovitz is a licensed auctioneer and certified member of the Appraisers Association of America.

 

Mr. Berkovitz will lead a show and tell of photographic works by artists who are either from Pittsburgh or worked there extensively here. Luke Swank, W. Eugene Smith and Clyde Hare will be featured. Examples of each artist's work will be available for examination and discussion.
